In a country where the electricity supply is not reliable and has been subject to outages of up to 18 hours, renewable energy is becoming more popular. These NGOs are making a difference by helping with the installation of solar panels on rooftops or raising awareness about clean cooking stoves.
The Solar Energy Society Pakistan (SESP) was founded in 2009 by a group of young Pakistani professionals from diverse backgrounds who shared an interest in promoting sustainable development through solar power as well as other forms of renewable energy. In just over five years, SESP has grown into one of the largest voluntary organizations dedicated to harnessing solar power for use throughout Pakistan. Today they have installed over 7,000 photovoltaic systems across the country.
NGOs in Pakistan are now looking for alternative renewable energy. This is because of the high cost of electricity and fuel. The government has imposed taxes on fossil fuels after environmental damage was observed through global warming. NGOs are now trying to help people understand that they can use alternate sources of energy, such as solar power, to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels which cause pollution.
